English as a Foreign Language.
This is a general English course for students aged 16 years and over. No English language level is required.
This course is taught in small classes, and uses textbooks and class communication to support students as they learn English. Students are also given the opportunity to use the skills they have learned in class, with topic-based learning, weekly vocabulary and speaking assessments.
Student work rights
AIS is an NZQA Category 1 provider. This means English Language students studying 14 weeks or more, full-time, are entitled to work up to 20 hours per week.
Class sizes
The maximum class size for an English Language Course is 15 students. This number is strictly applied to General and Skills English classes. Academic classes may have up to 20 students.
Programme Structure/Courses
Students are assigned to one of the following classes to ensure they are at the optimum level for progress:
- Elementary
- Upper Elementary
- Pre-Intermediate
- Intermediate
- Upper Intermediate
- Advanced
- Skills classes
Students are given the opportunity to use the skills they have learned in general classes. There is a focus on “real day-to-day” English with topic-based learning and weekly vocabulary and speaking assessments.
Extra classes
Extra classes are available after regular class times for students who want to develop their speaking, pronunciation and listening skills.
Student work rights
As a NZQA Category 1 provider, English language students of AIS who have a valid student visa, are studying full-time and their course is 14 weeks or longer in duration are entitled to work up to 20 hours per week.
Maximum Class Size
The maximum class size in the ELC is 15 students. This number may occasionally be exceeded on the roll when students are on extended breaks etc. This maximum number is strictly applied to General and Skills English classes. Academic classes may have up to 20 students in keeping with the tertiary nature of these preparation courses.
