AIS Library & Learning Skills workshops are open to Auckland Institute of Studies students (and staff) and are targeted for both undergraduate and postgraduate level of studies.

Reference management software (Mendeley)

(1.5hr duration)

This workshop will show you how to use Mendeley software to find, access, save and organise your references and how to automatically cite and reference in your academic work in APA 7th referencing style. Your Mendeley online reference library will remain permanently accessible for your use in future.

AI Research and Assignment Tools

This workshop will introduce effective Artificial Intelligence (AI) online tools and how to safely use them for your study, research, assignments and academic writing. We will discuss positive / best academic integrity practices and how to (and when not to) use AI tools to ensure originality and integrity of your academic work. Assignment skills: Getting started

(1.5hr duration)

Please bring your assessment sheets to this session and we will work on your assignments together. In this session we will analyse your assignment topic & tasks (what are you actually asked to do), find relevant information, select and analyse scholarly readings and sources, write your assignment structure and apply online referencing tools to help you cite and reference in your assignment. Workshop PDF.

Before you take your next exam, how will you prepare? What strategies will you use during the exam? What can you do after it ends to improve your performance in the next test? Academic writing skills

Report writing skills

(2hr duration)

Written reports are a common form of assessment at university. Some academic assignments ask for a ‘report’, rather than an essay, and students are often confused about what that really means. APA referencing skills

This workshop will help you get started with APA referencing. You will learn the importance of acknowledging different types of sources and how to cite and reference in your assignments. Managing time to accomplish goals can be challenging. Time management strategies allow you to plan out your time so that you can get things done and avoid stress. Effective group work skills

An important aspect of your studies is the opportunity to work as part of a group. Group work is useful because it can be an effective and powerful way to learn and is also highly relevant to the workplace. This workshop will provide some strategies to help you to work efficiently on your group tasks and assignments.

Academic reading skills

As part of your studies, you will need to get through many readings, especially course materials and wider readings in preparation for assignments. Many of these academic texts and materials may seem quite challenging, especially at the start. However, there are various strategies that you can use to make the task less overwhelming. This workshop will equip you with tips to help you get the most out of your readings.

Numeracy Skills

At the end of this workshop students will be able to identify their strengths and areas for development in numeracy, utilise online resources to develop their numeracy skills and refresh their knowledge of mathematical formulas.
