Cross-Credits and Advanced Standing

AIS offers credit for prior studies to new students who have completed courses at institutions within New Zealand and overseas, enabling students to “top-up” their qualifications.

Cross-Credits

You may apply for credit for courses which have been completed at other institutions.  Application fees apply.  Formal cross-credit transfer (articulation) agreements are also in place with a number of local and international partner institutions - no fees apply for courses included in these agreements.  Further information is available from Student Services.

A cross-credit application will only be considered for credit towards a programme in which you are currently enrolled and must be submitted within four weeks of that programme's official start date.  Where an articulation agreement is in place, and for all New Zealand institutions, attach a copy of your official transcript.  For all other institutions, you must supply detailed, authorised course outlines and results records, as well as information about the qualification and the awarding institution.

The cross-credit application form is available on the AIS e-learning system and from reception.  After completing the form, attach all supporting documentation and discuss with your head of programme, then submit the form to the Accounts office with payment where necessary.

Following submission, a formal assessment of your application will be made based on level, credit value and content mapping with AIS courses. Your application will then be forwarded to the Board of Studies for approval and you will be notified of the result by email.

There is no provision for cross-credits in graduate diploma programmes, or in pre-BA studies.

Cross-Credit Limitations

Normally the number of cross-credits available is subject to the following limitations:

  1. Level 5 and Level 6 diplomas - three courses
  2. Bachelor’s degree level - nine courses, except for the BIT - 12 courses
  3. Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration - 12 credits
  4. Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology - two courses (at Level 7 only)
  5. Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration - 24 credits
  6. Master of Information Technology - 90 credits (at Level 8 only)
  7. Master of Business Administration - 48 credits

Where an approved articulation agreement exists, this limit may be increased to:

  1. Level 5 and Level 6 diplomas - four courses
  2. Bachelor’s degree level - 12 courses, except for the BIT - 14 courses
  3. Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration - 12 credits
  4. Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology - two courses (at Level 7 only)
  5. Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration - 30 credits
  6. Master of Information Technology - 90 credits (at Level 8 only)
  7. Master of Business Administration - 75 credits

Students awarded cross-credits towards a qualification who subsequently transfer to a lower-level qualification (for instance, from a bachelor’s degree to a Level 6 diploma) will only be able to count the number of cross-credits allowed for the lower-level qualification.

Note that these arrangements are for students being admitted to AIS for the first time. Existing AIS students seeking to study a course at another institution with the intention of seeking a future cross-credit must seek prior approval from their head of programme. Failure to do so may result in the cross-credit application being rejected.

Advanced Standing

If you are entering an AIS bachelor’s degree programme and have completed a relevant New Zealand certificate or diploma programme at Levels 5 to 6, you may apply for advanced standing for up to 240 credits. No fees apply. Credit for advanced standing must be approved by the Board of Studies before being shown on your academic transcript. Further information is available from Student Services.

Note that if you have incomplete Level 5 or 6 qualifications relevant to your degree programme, you may still apply for cross-credits as above.

Cross-Credit Application Fees

Application fees are non-refundable and must be paid before an application can be processed:

NZ$50 per course for studies completed in New Zealand
NZ$275 per course for studies completed overseas

There are no fees for credit of courses included in approved articulation agreements with other providers.

Tuition fees paid for courses subsequently cross-credited are held in credit until completion of the programme, for reconciliation upon clearance.
